Charlotte-Area Lawyer Nancy Black Norelli Honored By North Carolina Lawyers Weekly With 2012 Women Of Justice Award


- Recognized for demonstrated leadership, service and accomplishment in the legal profession in N.C. -

 

Charlotte, N.C. - - Charlotte-area lawyer and former district court judge Nancy Black Norelli has been honored by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly with a 2012 Women of Justice Award. The awards recognize North Carolina women ‘who have demonstrated leadership, integrity, service, sacrifice and accomplishment in improving the quality of justice and exemplifying the highest ideals of the legal profession’. 

 

Norelli was selected by N.C. Lawyers Weekly for a Litigation Practitioner Award that is awarded to ‘women litigation practitioners who fulfill the above ideals in improving the quality of justice or contributing to the betterment of the profession’. She is also a finalist for the additional distinction of receiving the Woman of the Year award that will be announced on November 15 at their awards ceremony in Raleigh. This award will recognize the ‘woman whose fulfillment of the above ideals truly stands out in making an extraordinary difference in improving the quality of justice or exemplifying the highest ideals of the legal profession’. 

 

Norelli currently chairs the of the North Carolina Bar Association Judicial Performance Evaluation committee that recently surveyed North Carolina lawyers to rate judicial incumbents and challengers in the District and Superior Court contested races in the areas of integrity and fairness, legal ability, professionalism, communication, and administrative skills – characteristics essential for good judges. North Carolina is the first state in the nation to rate judicial candidates in contested judicial races. Already, aspects of this process are becoming a model for other states, including those that have retention elections. The non-partisan survey results can be found at www.electncjudges.org.

 

Norelli brings over 30 years of legal experience – including dozens of jury trials - to her work. In addition, she has been a visiting lecturer at Davidson College, UNC-Charlotte and the Charlotte School of Law. She is also heavily involved in the community through volunteerism and pro bono work, is a founding member of Good Friends and on the boards of a number of local charities, including the American Cancer Society where she is a breast cancer survivor speaker. In addition, Norelli shares her legal knowledge through the mentoring of young lawyers.
